Olga Vidov was born in Moscow in the former Soviet Union and raised in Kiev. She immigrated to the United States in 1979 with her five-year old daughter, Vicki, and twin infant daughters, Kristina and Kathy. Four years later, she opened the Gemini Salon and Spa on Hudson Street in the West Village. The original Gemini was a small, four-chair salon, but, for Olga, it was a dream come true.
As a child, she had fond memories of accompanying her mother to her cousin’s salon in Kiev, where she delighted in the camaraderie, the conversation and the exotic aromas that wafted through the air. It was an exciting world for a child and it was then and there that she decided she wanted to be a hair dresser.
In 1993, Olga moved Gemini to larger quarters a few doors down from the original salon. By then, Gemini Salon and Spa had built a successful clientele and was a fixture in the West Village. Now, Olga has expanded once again, opening Gemini 14 on 14th Street and taking her vision of hair dressing to a new and unique level. Gemini 14, located midway between the Meat Market and Union Square, is a hair color bar in addition to providing traditional services.
Olga’s daughters – Kristina and Kathy – grew up in Gemini and, now, both are Gemini hair dressers. “They love to do hair,” says Olga. “I never expected them to follow in my footsteps but I’m glad they did. My dream apparently was a powerful one because it has continued into the next generation.”
